I wrote this entry last summer but never posted it. Since it’s been a very long time since I last posted, I thought I would give this one another shot. Hope you enjoy!
You may be thinking that basil is a rather odd addition to lemonade, but believe me when I say…this drink will stop you in your tracks! The lemon-lime combo is delightfully refreshing, and the basil knocks your socks off. I wish I had photos!
Simple basil lemonade
simple syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
2 medium sprigs of basil (including stems)
lemonade
2 lemons
3 limes
Water to taste
Ice
Basil leaves for garnish
Optional: 1-2 oz gin or vodka
Combine the sugar, water, and basil in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Let simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, juice the lemons and limes in a medium- to large pitcher. Add 1/4 cup of the simple syrup and stir. Add enough ice to fill the pitcher halfway, then add enough water to fill it 3/4 of the way. Taste the lemonade; if it’s too strong, add more water. If it’s too tart, add more sugar syrup. If it’s too sweet, add another lemon or lime. Garnish with a basil leaf or two, and a splash or two of gin or vodka if you like and enjoy!
